New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday congratulated Rishi Sunak, the Indian-origin British politician, who takes on as the next UK Prime Minister creating history after his predecessor Liz Truss stepped down.

PM Modi said he looks forward to working with Sunak on global issues and implementing the roadmap to 2030.

"Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the 'living bridge' of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership," PM Modi tweeted.

At 42 years of age, Sunak is the youngest and the first person of colour to hold the post.

In his first address to the people after being named Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak said it was the "Greatest privilege of my life...Will work day in and out to deliver".

Sunak will take the oath of office on Oct 28.
