Ansari, who is currently lodged in Agra jail on charges of murdering a BJP MLA, conveyed the decision through his brother and national party president Afzal Ansari in Varanasi. He was to fight the elections on Quami Ekta Dal's ticket. Afzal Ansari reportedly said that the decision was taken avoid division of votes and to straighten secular forces. Ansari has contested from Varanasi on a BSP ticket in 2009 elections against BJP's Murli Manohar Joshi.
