Maharashtra records 116 COVID-19 deaths in 24 hours, cases cross 62,000

Mumbai/IBNS: Maharashtra on Friday added 2,682 new coronavirus cases and 116 deaths in the last 24 hours, resulting in the highest-single day rise in terms of fatalities since the pandemic broke in India.

The total number of cases in the state stood at 62,228 and deaths at 2,098.

Maharashtra, the state being home to the financial capital of India, has been the worst affected country, accounting for one-third of the nation's total cases of the highly contagious virus.

Mumbai alone recorded over 36,932 cases including 1,173 deaths.

In the last 24 hours, the city reported 1,447 cases and 38 deaths.

Meanwhile, India witnessed another major day of spike in the number of COVID-19 cases as 7,466 new cases were reported from the country in the past 24 hours, as per Ministry of Health data released on Friday. 

The major surge in the cases took the overall tally in the country to  1,65,799.

With 175 new deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, the death toll due to the highly infectious disease now stands at 4706.
