Mamata Banerjee blames BJP's 'vendetta politics' for Tapas Pal's death

Kolkata/IBNS: Hitting out at the country's ruling dispensation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s "vendetta politics" for the death of actor-turned politician Tapas Pal.

Pal, a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and MP, passed away at the age of 61 on Tuesday early morning.

Hitting out at the Centre for using the probe agencies to harass Pal in the Rose Valley chit fund scam, Banerjee, who was at Rabindra Sadan here to pay last homage to her former colleague, said, "Tapas Pal's death once again proved how the agencies are torturing people mentally. Pal was completely disturbed in his last days."

The former TMC MP from West Bengal's Krishnanagar constituency was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged link to Rose Valley Chit Fund scam in 2016.

He was later released on bail after spending 13 months in prison.

Banerjee also accused the Centre of playing vendetta politics leading to the death of multiple persons including former TMC MP Sultan Ahmed.

"The Centre's political vendetta is sparing no one," added the TMC supremo.

Pal, who was once a leading Bengali actor, is credited for his films Dadar Kirti, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa, Parabatpriya and Saheb.

He passed away suffering a massive cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Mumbai.

The actor was a TMC MLA from Kolkata's Alipur constituency between 2001 and 2009.

He was elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014.
