Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced a scheme which will provide Rs. 10 lakh and a government job to the family members of Covid-19 warriors, who lost their lives while serving people in the times of the pandemic.

The Covid-19 warriors include doctors, healthcare workers, police and government employees.

"One family member of the deceased Covid warrior will get a government job," announced Mamata at state headquarters Nabanna here.

As a mark of respect to all Covid warriors, the state government will give a symbolic batch and certificate to all Covid warriors.

A 38-year old Deputy Magistrate in West Bengal, named Debdutta Ray, on Monday died of the Covid-19 pandemic becoming the first government official to succumb to the respiratory disease.

West Bengal has recently witnessed a massive spike in Covid-19 cases as the tally surged to 32,838 including 980 fatalities.

However, the CM on Wednesday credited the spike in Covid cases to the ramping up of testing.

"The cases will spike because we are going to ramp up the testing," said Mamata.

Acting tough on government hospitals, the CM on Wednesday said only the health department will decide on the admission of Covid patients.

Mamata's comment came in the backdrop of an 18-year old boy's death at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital after the youth, who was infected with the deadly virus, was denied admission by several hospitals and nursing homes in the North 24 Pargana district.
