Mamata Banerjee to skip Home Ministry's meeting on Census and NPR

New Delhi/Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will on Friday skip the Union Home Ministry's meeting on Census and National Population Register (NPR) maintaining her stance over the new steps taken by the Centre.

The Home Ministry has called the meeting with all states and union territories to discuss the modalities of the Census and NPR.

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai will chair the meeting.

Hitting out at the Centre, Banerjee said neither she nor anyone from West Bengal will attend the meeting.

Earlier Banerjee and her Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan had put on hold all works related to NPR considering it as the stepping stone for the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

"We thought NPR was Census. But later when we reckoned that NPR is the way towards NRC then we stopped all works related to it," the West Bengal Chief Minister had earlier said.

Several non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Ministers are opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, NRC and NPR for last one month.
