Mamata, Shiv Sena to meet Prez tomorrow demanding rollback of currency ban

New Delhi, Nov 15 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee along with BJP's main ally Shiv Sena will meet President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday with a petition for a rollback of the Government's decision to abolish 500 and 1000 rupee notes.

However, Congress and CPM will not be part of the protest march.

Ahead of her visit to New Delhi, Banerjee told media that the present move by the Centre has turned people into "beggars."

"The situation is serious. Very grim. People are suffering. We will meet the Hon. President tomorrow, no matter what #DeMonetisation," she had tweeted.

She further posted: "Old Rs 500/1000 notes allowed in railways, petrol pumps. NHAI exempted. But no exemption for state sector agriculture, co-operatives..No exemption for patients in private hospitals, nursing homes or for non-prescription medicines. Why this discrimination?"

Meanwhile, the Oppositions have launched an united attack against the Centre's decision to demonetise the old Rs.500/1000 notes.

In a surprise move, BJP's ally in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena, has also joined the WB CM.

Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has criticised the government for the severe problems caused to common people as a result of the demonetisation policy.

The Congress had earlier hosted opposition parties to plan a united response on demonetisation.

However, they said they are not demanding a roll back of the initiative but are "against the economic chaos inflicted by this hasty, unprepared move."

Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party is also supporting Banerjee.

With Parliament Session beginning on Wednesday, the government is all set to face stiff criticisms from the oppositions in both the houses.

PM Modi is continuously trying to garner public support with his frequent addresses.

Justifying his move of banning Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, Modi on Monday said the poor people in the nation are 'sleeping peacefully' these days.

The government has scrapped the Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 notes with effect from Tuesday midnight to fight black money.

In unprecedented scenes, millions of people since Thursday morning thronged in front of banks across the country to deposit the now-invalid Rs. 500 and rs. 1000 notes.

The Government asked the people to deposit their Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes in banks within a specific time frame and get smaller denominations in exchange.

It has also  announced that deposits above Rs. 2.5 lakh will be taxed and could draw a 200 per cent penalty if found disproportionately higher than the account owner's income.

The banks have been asked to keep the details of PAN card of people depositing such large amounts over the 50-day period till Dec 30.
