Guwahati, Oct 24 (IBNS) : Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh and his colleague Depty Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei on Monday escaped unhurt when suspected NSCN(IM) militants opened gunfire as they were getting out of their helicopter at Ukhrul helipad in Ukhrul district.

Two jawan of the Manipur Rifles were injured in the firing when the Manipur CM stepped out of the helicopter to take part in an inaugural function in Ukhrul district.

Manipur police said that the suspected NSCN(IM) militants opened gunfire targeting Ibobi when the CM stepped out of the helicopter.

In the militant ambush, two jawans of Manipur Rifles were injured and they were immediately admitted at the nearest hospital.

Following the untoward situation, Ibobi’s helicopter immediately took off and left for Chingai but could not land in the remote area following locals protest and cancelled the programme of inaugurating a hospital and flew back to Imphal.

Local people protested against Manipur CM’s visit to the remote area in Ukhrul district.

The protesters also torched few police vehicles following the gunfire.

On the other hand, a jawan of Indian Reserve Battalion was injured in a bomb blast that took place at the remote area, few hours before of gunfire attack on Manipur CM.
