Imphal, Sep 2 (IBNS) Manipur continued to be tense with the number of deaths in violence spiralling to eight and more than 30 being injured since clashes between mob and police took place in Churachandpur district on Monday

The violence broke out over the passage of three controversial bills by the Assembly on Monday, which has caused resentment among the tribals who fear that their land rights would be snatched by "outsiders".

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh  has said the situation is "very tense."

He has assured Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh of all possible central assistance.

Reports said following a request by the Manipur government the centre would send  additional paramilitary forces to the state  to assist police in tackling the situation.

Three persons were killed on Tuesday when police opened fire on a mob which attacked Churachandpur police station.  Earlier, five people had died since Monday night in arson and violence.

Curfew has been clamped in several areas of Churachandapur.
