Manipur mob lynching : Four police personnel suspended, inquiry initiated

Guwahati, Sept 15 (IBNS) : Four policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, who were present when a youth was lynched last week in Manipur on suspicion of being a  bike thief, were suspended on Sunday.

A top official of Manipur police said  an inquiry has been initiated after a video of the incident showed that the four armed police personnel were present at the spot when the victim, a 26-year-old victim was still alive.

On September 13, Farooq Ahmed Khan, a 26-year-old MBA student hailing from Lilong Haoreibi area in Thoubal district was attacked by a mob at Tharoijam Awang Leikai under Lamsgang assembly constituency in Imphal West district.

The incident  happened when Farooq and his two friends were travelling in the area.

The mob also torched the car.  Khan's two friends managed to escape.

Locals alleged that the youths were caught when they were stealing a two-wheeler from the area.

Following the incident, the Manipur police  registered a case under section 302,117 and 34 of IPC and arrested five people.

The police said 13 people who attacked the youth have been identified and will be arrested soon. Further investigation is going on.

Following the incident, different organisations have asked the state government to conduct a proper investigation.

The Manipur Human Rights Commission has also registered a suo moto case and directed the Director General of Police of Manipur to submit a report by September 22.

Members of the Joint Action Committee, formed against the mob lynching incident met Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday a submitted to him a memorandum, demading suspension of the erring police personnel, departmental inquiry against them
