New Delhi: During his 'Mann ki Baat' radio program on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Brian D Kharpran, a resident of Meghalaya, for his role in the exploration of caves in the northeastern region.

In the 104th episode of the monthly broadcast, Modi introduced Brian D Kharpran, hailing from Meghalaya, as an enthusiast of speleology, which refers to the scientific study of caves.

Modi mentioned that 76-year-old Kharpran discovered his passion for this field years ago through storybooks, and he initiated his first exploration as a school student back in 1964.

Notably, Kharpran and a friend co-founded the Meghalaya Adventurers' Association (MAA) in 1990, with the aim of discovering hidden caves in Meghalaya.

Over the years, they have discovered more than 1,700 caves in the state, earning a place on the 'World Cave Map'.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Meghalaya boasts some of India's longest and deepest caves.

Modi also praised Kharpran and his team for their efforts in studying the ecosystems of these caves, including the unique fauna that reside within.

Their research has revealed rare species not found anywhere else on the planet.

The Prime Minister commended their dedication and encouraged citizens to consider Meghalaya as an exciting tourist destination.

Following Modi's acknowledgment, the association shared the news on their Facebook page, celebrating the mention in the 104th edition of 'Mann ki Baat' on August 27.
