Massive fire breaks out in Kolkata multi-storey, firefighting ops underway

Kolkata/IBNS: A major fire broke out at a multi-storey residential building in central Kolkata's Ganesh Chandra Avenue on Friday night, reports said.

According to reports, flames were first noticed at around 10:30 pm. at the building, where more than 50 families live, and the fire brigade was called in.

As many as 10 fire tenders along with a hydraulic ladder, local police and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel rushed to the scene.

Till the last update came in, firemen are continuing firefighting efforts while DMG personnel are carrying out operations to rescue all the people trapped inside the building.

Locals said that a 14-year-old boy, who is a resident of the multi-storey, jumped from the building in panic.

He has been rescued and admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, according to officials.

Meanwhile, DMG personnel and fire and emergency services officials have rescued several persons, who had been trapped inside the building.

State Fire Minister Sujit Bose visited the scene later at night to oversee the firefighting and rescue efforts.
