Mayawati calls for Opposition unity ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha election

Lucknow, Aug 21 (IBNS): Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has called for an Opposition unity ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BSP on their official Twitter handle shared a picture urging for a unity among all opposition parties which consists of faces from Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United), Trinamool Congress, Congress.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, West Bengal CM and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi were seen in the picture shared by the BSP.

The call for the Opposition unity also brought the BSP's and their arch rival Samajwadi Party closer to each other as former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav was seen in the picture along with the rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav.

Former UP CM Mayawati has resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat last month after alleging that she was not allowed to speak in the house.

In the UP Assembly election which was held in early 2017, the BJP thrashed the SP-Congress alliance and reduced the BSP to only 19 seats.

Though the JD(U) broke their grand alliance with the RJD and Congress over alleged corruption issue against former Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, one of the party leaders and RS member, Sharad Yadav, openly attacked chief Nitish Kumar for stitching an alliance with the BJP in late July.

In the recently concluded Presidential and Vice Presidential elections, the 17 and 18 opposition parties respectively were seen to come forward and field their joint candidate though they lost in both the occasions.

While Meira Kumar was defeated by NDA's candidate Ram Nath Kovind, former BJP veteran Venkaiah Naidu won over Opposition's Gopal Krishna Gandhi in the Presidential and Vice Presidential polls respectively.
