Mayawati hits back at Modi over Alwar gang-rape incident, refers to PM's wife

Lucknow, May 13 (IBNS): Continuing the political attacks in the last leg of Lok Sabha elections, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the latter's comment on Alwar gang-rape incident, media reports said.

Reply to Modi's comment where he said Mayawati has shed "crocodile tears" over the incident, the BSP supremo stated as quoted by NDTV, "Yesterday PM Modi, in his election rallies here, did dramebaazi of his love for Dalits to draw Dalits but he will gain nothing from this...He was silent on the oppression of Dalits. He is trying to play dirty politics over it."

Mayawati even referred to Modi's wife in her attack against the Prime Minister. She said: "How can he respect others' sisters and wives when he has left his own wife for political gains? It is my special appeal to women of this country not to vote a person like this. PM Modi, in this election, kept changing his caste according to the situation."

In a strong reaction, Union Finance Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran Arun Jaitley tweeted, "Behan Mayawati - She is firm on becoming a Prime Minister. Her governance, ethics and discourse stoops to an all-time low. Her personal attack today on the Prime Minister exposes her as unfit for public life."

The political controversy erupted over the incident after a Dalit woman was allegedly raped by six men in Rajasthan's Alwar. The accused also had allegedly beaten up the victim's husband.

Mayawati had strongly criticised the Congress-led Rajasthan government as police delayed in filing a case for the general elections in the state. The Rajasthan government is running with the support of BSP.

The Prime Minister earlier lashed out at Mayawati asking why she has not withdrawn her support from the Rajasthan government even after the rape incident.

The Congress assumed power in the state in Dec 2018, ousting the BJP.
