Meghalaya "Rat-Hole" mine tragedy: Second body recovered

Shillong, Jan 26 (IBNS): Rescue workers have recovered another decomposed body of a miner who died inside a flooded rat-hole mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills, officials said on Saturday.

The Indian Navy tweeted: "#MeghalayaMineTragedy #IndianNavy diving team finds second body 280ft inside the rat hole mine. First body was recovered yesterday @SpokespersonMoD @DefenceMinIndia @nsitharaman @PMOIndia."

This is the second body recovered from the rat-hole mine since officials started started pumping out water from the illegal mine.

The mine had collapsed on Dec 13.

15 miners had gone down in the mine and went missing.

So far, no one has been recovered alive.

The operation to rescue the trapped miners is one of the most challenging the National Disaster Response Force has seen, its commandant SK Sastri has told NDTV.

As per the NDTV report, the National Green Tribunal banned coal mining in Meghalaya in 2014 after environmental activists complained it was responsible for severe water pollution.

However, illegal mining reportedly continues in the area.
