Modi govt finally manages to take Triple Talaq bill through Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, July 30 (IBNS): In a big victory for the Narendra Modi government, the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the Triple Talaq bill, which criminalises instant divorcing of wives by Muslim men.

While 99 lawmakers voted for the bill, 84 voted against the same.

The bill, which aims to end the practice of Muslim men divorcing their wives instantly by uttering "talaq" thrice, was tabled by Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. It was earlier passed by the Lok Sabha, where the BJP enjoys a comfortable majority.

Though the BJP ally Janata Dal (Secular) opposed the bill, its walk out along with few other Opposition parties of the Rajya Sabha brought down the majority mark enabling the NDA to have a smooth sail in the House. The YSR Congress Party, Congress are among several opposition parties that opposed the bill in its current form.

Several Opposition parties want the bill to be sent to the Select Panel as they disagree with the criminalisation of the men who exercise triple talaq.

According to the new law, the Muslim men could face jail for the triple talaq practice.

The Opposition questioned how would the Muslim men pay their wives if they go to jail.
