Modi wave still strong in Gujarat, uproots Congress in Himachal

Gandhinagar/Shimla, Dec 18 (IBNS): The relentless campaigning of Rahul Gandhi in Gujarat failed to change Congress' electoral fate as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), riding on the Narendra Modi wave, is heading to form the government for the sixth term in the state.

Though the counting of votes appeared to be interesting in the middle giving an edge to the Congress, soon the table turned to favour the BJP.

BJP is leading in 106 seats in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly and thus still way ahead of the Congress.

The Congress is leading in 73 seats.

While the BJP swept the north, south and central Gujarat, Congress did well in Saurashtra-Kutch region.

In north Gujarat, BJP is leading in 31 seats as opposed to Congress' 18.

In central Gujarat, BJP still leads in 29 seats while Congress in 18.

In south Gujarat, BJP is leading in 21 seats and Congress in just 7.

Saurashtra-Kutch is the only region in the state where Congress performed better than the BJP. Congress is leading in 31 while BJP in 25 in the region, according to the latest report.

Though Congress formed an alliance with Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) to fight the election, the joint force failed to capitalise on 22 years of anti-incumbency against the BJP.

Along with retaining PM Modi's home state, the BJP snatched Himachal Pradesh from the Congress.

Out of total 68 seats, BJP is leading in 44 seats leaving 20 for Congress.

However, BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal is still trailing.

With the victory in Himachal, now 19 states are under the belt of BJP.

Union Minister Smriti Irani, while interacting with media, said: "It is the victory of development."

Poll Result:

Gujarat:

Total: 182
BJP: 106
Cong: 73

Himachal Pradesh:

Total: 68
BJP: 44
Cong: 20
