Moral policing in Kolkata metro: Police lodge FIR
Kolkata, May 4 (IBNS): Four days after a couple was allegedly beaten up by a mob while travelling in Kolkata metro for "standing too close" to each other, the city police on Friday lodged an FIR against "unknown persons", officials said.
According to reports, after completing preliminary inquiry, an FIR has been lodged at Sinthee Police Station in north Kolkata under IPC sections 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (Wrongful restraint) and 506 (Criminal intimidation).
"Based on an complaint filed by Kolkata Metro Railway, we have registered an FIR against unidentified persons and our probe into the case is currently underway," a senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.
Earlier on Monday night (Apr 30), in a clear act of moral policing, a young couple was reportedly harassed and assaulted by few of their co-passengers at Dum Dum metro station for allegedly standing too close and hugging each other in a metro train.
After the incident took place, students and youngsters staged demonstration at several metro stations in the city and put forward a memorandum to the metro authority demanding investigation into the incident and strict action against the attackers.
Amid massive protests, the Kolkata Metro Railway lodged a complaint at Sinthee Police Station on Wednesday and submitted Dum Dum metro station's CCTV footage of that day before the city police.
Kolkata Metro Railway, however, stated that they never support any kind of "moral policing".
