Lucknow/IBNS: Bringing out a contrast between the two neighbouring countries, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the Muslim population increased manifold in India since Independence because the community is given special rights unlike in Pakistan, media reports said.

Addressing a rally in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Gaya, Adityanath said as quoted by The Indian Express, "The Muslim population in India has increased manifold since 1947, it has gone up by seven to eight times. No one has any objection.

If they, as citizens of the country, work for development, they are welcome. Their population has increased because they have been given special rights and facilities. All possible steps were taken to ensure their growth. But what happened in Pakistan?"

The Chief Minister also said people who are opposing the CAA are "committing the sin" of working against the interests of the nation.

The CAA, which if implemented, will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.

The Union Home Minister last week issued a notification of the CAA effective from Jan 10.
