Naxalite leaders, booked after Bhangar clash, granted bail by Calcutta HC

Kolkata, Jul 27 (IBNS): The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted bail to two senior leaders of ultra-left organization Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Red Star, Pradip Singh Thakur and Sharmistha Chaudhury, who were arrested in January for their alleged role in a local movement at Bhangar in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.

Calcutta HC's Justice Jaymalya Bagchi granted them bail on a personal bail bond of Rs. 50,000 each.

Earlier in January, at least two youths were shot dead during a massive skirmish between local villagers and police over the erection of a 440/220 KV power grid substation in Bhangar.

The state government claimed that provocation of outsiders and Naxalite leaders led to the clash.

Days after the clash, CPI(ML) Red Star leaders Pradip Singh Thakur and Sharmistha Chaudhury and several other protesters, including few local villagers, were arrested and these two ultra-left leaders were charged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) sections.

However, the CPI(ML) Red Star leaders, who are currently in judicial custody, will be released from jail on Friday.
