Kolkata: Life in large parts of Kolkata and neighbouring districts was crippled from water-logging on Monday as heavy overnight rains triggered by a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal battered the region.

The services of Circular Rail between Dum Dum and BBD Bagh in Kolkata have been suspended on Monday after rain water covered a portion of tracks at several locations in the city. The municipal authorities at different wards deployed hundreds of pumps to drain out the water, UNI reported.

Train services were also affected in the Howrah section after water logging occured at Tikiapara carshed.

Air and ferry services at the Dum Dum airport and over the Ganga have also been considerably affected due to heavy rains.

More than 100 mm rains have been reported from eight localities in the city overnight.

A tree was uprooted at south Kolkata's Tollygunj area and parts of a house collapsed at Baguiati in the eastern part of the city.

However, there has been no report of any human casualty so far.

The MeT department predicted heavy rainfall in the region owing to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and the presence of an active monsoon trough.

Several districts, including South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, East Midnapore and Hooghly, are reeling under water following heavy rain.
