Opposition leaders support Kejriwal over his tussle with Delhi LG Anil Baijal

New Delhi, Jun 14 (IBNS): Seizing an opportunity to launch an attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government, several opposition leaders have flocked in to support Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his sit-in protest against Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal.

Giving no break to the political drama in the national capital, several Delhi ministers along with Kejriwal are continuing their indefinite protests outside Baijal's office to pressurise the LG to fulfill Delhi government's demands, media reports said.

The ministers are pressing the LG to direct the bureaucrats to join their works as they had allegedly gone on to an unofficial strike.

Supporting Kejriwal, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav tweeted in Hindi, "The dictator Centre has mocked democracy in Delhi and Puducherry..............."

CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has accused the central government of obstructing the elected government in Delhi from performing its duties.

Yechury tweeted, "BJP central government is using the office of the LG to obstruct the elected state government in Delhi to discharge its constitutional duties. This is despicable. The Centre must abandon this course of confrontation right away."

Actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan too came out in support of the Delhi CM.

Haasan tweeted, "Interference in the functioning of an elected government is unacceptable in a democracy. In fact what is happening in Delhi and in TN/Pondicherry are not too different. It is frustrating for people who want a change for the better."

Thanking Haasan, Kejriwal said in a tweet, "Thanks Kamal ji. I hope PM will allow us to work for the people of Delhi. No one shud be allowed to trample upon people’s will."

Raising her voice against the Centre, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said an "elected CM must get due respect."

Taking Kejriwal's side in the politically-fueled matter, Banerjee tweeted on Wednesday evening to say, "@ArvindKejriwal, CM of Delhi is sitting in a dharna in LG’s office for the last few days in the capital city of the country. Elected CM must get due respect. May I appeal to the Govt of India and @LtGovDelhi to resolve the problem immediately so that people do not suffer."

Kejriwal on Thursday said he and his ministers will not leave the LG's office until their demands are fulfilled.

He has also threatened that the ministers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government will stage a dharna outside the Prime Minister's office on Sunday if the matter does not resolve by the end of this week.
