Guwahati, Jan 3 (IBNS): 55-year old Aminul Hoque, a resident of middle Assam’s Nagaon district, who is tagged by D-voter (doubtful voter) is still waiting for inclusion his name in the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Not only Aminul Hoque,  over 1.25 lakh people are still waiting to get rid from ‘D’ tag.

Assam government on December 31 midnight had published the much awaited first part draft NRC by including 1.90 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applicants in the state and recognized them as legal citizens of India.

NRC state coordinator and commissioner of state home department Prateek Hajela said that, the rest 1.39 crore people are under different stages of verification and all genuine Indian citizens' names will be included in next phase draft.

Meanwhile, Nagaon district Deputy Commissioner and NRC district head Shamsher Singh said that, D-voter tagged peoples' name will not be included in the NRC.

“If the foreigners tribunal has declared anyone D-voter as legal Indian citizen, then his or her name would be included in the NRC,” Shamsher Singh said.

According to the Assam government data, the state has 1,25,155 D-voters at the moment and they are still awaiting to get rid of the ‘D’ tag.

Lower Assam’s district Barpeta tops in the list of D-voters with 20,595 D-voters, while northern Assam district Sonitpur has 17,526 D-voters.

Apart from these two districts, middle Assam’s district Nagaon has 11,566, 9872 in Dhubri, 9171 in Udalguri, 8903 in Goalpara, 5307 in Cachar, 4494 in Kamrup (Metro).

The NRC state coordinator said that, the entire NRC updation process is going on under supervision of the Supreme Court and the first part draft had published following the apex court directive.

“After publishing the first part draft, second phase verification process will be started soon. We will submit the status report before the Supreme Court in next hearing (February 20),” Hajela said.

It is to be mentioned that, around 76 lakh people have been left for the second phase verification process after family tree problems were raised for 46 lakh people and 29 lakh people (most of women) submitted panchayat documents.
