PM Modi visits Leh to review situation weeks after India-China faceoff at Galwan Valley

Leh/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made a surprise visit to Leh to take stock of the situation weeks after a deadly clash between the Indian and Chinese soldiers at Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh.

This is the first visit by any top minister of the central government to the Union Territory of Ladakh since the bloody faceoff on Jun 15.

Modi, accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat and Army chief MM Naravane, held talks with the Army, Air Force and ITBP personnel at Forward Post in Nimu early this morning.

The PM is scheduled to visit a hospital and meet the injured soldiers.

Though Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was scheduled to visit Ladakh on Thursday, his tour was later deferred.

In the first deadly clash between the soldiers of the two countries in more than 45 years, at least 20 Indian personnel were martyred.

Unconfirmed reports have claimed that around 45 Chinese soldiers had died in the clash, justifying Prime Minister Modi's words that the martyred Indian soldiers died attacking its opponent till the last breath.

'Not photo-ops but want decisiveness from PM's Office': Congress reacts

Reacting to Modi's visit to Leh, Congress leader Sushmita Dev told India Blooms, "The Prime Minister is fully aware of what's happening there. It is fine for him to go and meet soldiers. But it doesn't take the Prime Minister to go to Ladakh to know that China has already intruded into our territory.

"So we don't want photo-ops but want decisiveness coming from the Prime Minister's Office. Let the nation know that the Prime Minister already knew what had happened in the border before he went to Ladakh."
