Politicians, B-Town condole Vinod Mehra's demise
New Delhi/Mumbai, Mar 8 (IBNS): Politicians, celebrities and other eminent personalities on Sunday mourned the demise of veteran journalist and Outlook Group's editorial chairman Vinod Mehta.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock and deep anguish at the passing away of Mehta.
Gandhi extended her heart felt condolences to the family and friends of Mehta.
"A fearless journalist, Shri Mehta stood for and pioneered a journalistic stream that stood for liberal-progressive values and anchored itself in human conscience. He remained steadfast in his commitment even when the atmosphere was intolerant and adverse. Shri Vinod Mehta will be missed for ever by his friends and the journalistic fraternity, as indeed his millions of readers," INC tweeted.
Condoling his death, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley posted: "Vinod Mehta’s death is a loss to journalism. His absence will be felt in every debate."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted: "Deepest condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of senior journalist Vinod Mehta. Rest in Peace."
Congress leader Ajay Maken tweeted: "#RIPVinodMehta! You stood as a pillar of liberal-progressive,independent journalism. So full of life, your not being there seems impossible."
Filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar wrote: "A voice from the school of rational thought has been lost today. Vinod Mehta. RIP."
Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee posted: "Vinod Mehta, u wl always b remembered for all ur courageous acts. RIP.
Praising the fearless journalist, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi wrote: "Vinod mehta:an acerbic tongue, a free spirit, fearless & fiercely independent, staunchly irreverent, a wicked sense of humour & dog lover. Mehta hd steadfast secular values, v liberal, iconoclastic, no hesitation to call spade a shovel, cld serve only noninterfering proptors!"
Actor Siddharth tweeted: "RIP Vinod Mehta. Very influential journalist and editor for our generation. Strong opinions. One of the last of the old school. #outlook.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor posted: "Can't believe someone as lively,frank,opinionated &larger-than-life as VinodMehta has passed away. His trenchant writing will be much missed."
Congress leader Manish Tewari wrote: "My profound condolences on the sad demise of Sh Vinod Mehta a liberal both in word and deed A person whose unconventional life was inspiring."
Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu tweeted: "My condolences to bereaved family and friends of Sri Vinod Mehta. May the departed soul rest in peace."
Vinod Mehta died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Sunday.
He was 72.
According to reports, Mehta was on a ventilatory support after he had a massive cardiac arrest on Thursday.
He released his second book Editor Unplugged recently.
Mehta had worked with several leading publications including Debonair, Sunday Observer, Pioneer and Indian Post.
Condoling his demise, Prime Minister Naredra Modi earlier tweeted: "Frank & direct in his opinions, Vinod Mehta will be remembered as a fine journalist & writer. Condolences to his family on his demise."
