President Mukherjee visits Peking University, meets Chinese Education Minister

Beijing, May 26 (IBNS) President Pranab Mukherjee, who is visiting China, attended the Peking University on Thursday, where he witnessed the exchange of 10 MOU's between the two nations.

"#PresidentMukherjee attended at Peking University today a Round Table of VCs & heads of higher education institutions of India & China," a tweet from the President's official Twitter account read.

Attending the round table meet, President Mukherjee said that India and China are major players in the 21st century.

President Mukherjee also met Chinese Education Minister Yuan Guiren before garlanding a bust of poet Rabindranath Tagore inside the varsity premises.

"India and China are poised to play a significant and constructive role in the 21st Century," he said.

He said that Takshashila was a melting pot of cultures, where the four major cultures, Indian, Chinese, Greek and Persian met.

"Takshashila was a meeting ground of four civilizations – Indian, Persian, Greek and Chinese," Mukherjee said.

Hailing India's effort into becoming a global force, Mukherjee said, "India is reviving this tradition & creating centres of excellence that can be
ranked among leading institutions of world," he said.

Mukherjee also prescribed research and innovation as the keystones for widening a country's production.

He said, "A conducive educational eco-system is essential to promote innovation and entrepreneurship."
