Protest in Assam over citizenship law: Japan PM Shinzo Abe may cancel visit to India
Tokyo/New Delhi/IBNS: Amid ongoing violent ptotests in Assam over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Japan PM Shinzo Abe is considering canceling a trip to India, media reports said.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is considering canceling a trip to India, set to start Sunday, due to the deteriorating security situation there, informed sources said Friday, reported Jiji Press.
Abe was scheduled to begin his India trip from Sunday.
Abe has said that he will visit India Sunday through Tuesday, planning to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the northeastern Indian city of Guwahati on Monday, reported Jiji Press.
The Japanese and Indian governments are now seeking the possibility of changing the meeting venue, the sources told the news agency.
Assam is witnessing violent protests for the past several days over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The CAB, which has now become a law with President Ram Nath Kovind's assent, will grant citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan on or before Dec 31, 2014.
