Puducherry to impose plastic ban from June 5

Puducherry, Mar 5 (UNI): The Puducherry administration has proposed to impose a ban on plastic from June 5 on the World environment day, according to Science,Technology and environment Department Director Smitha on Tuesday.

Smitha said environment minister M Kandasamy had already conducted a consultation meeting to produce alternative products for plastic bags to avoid any inconvenience to the public.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including environment secretary Parthiban it was decided to accord training to educated women to prepare paper bags to be used in place of plastic bags.

Accordingly, training camps for the same would be held tomorrow at Embalom, Kirumambakkam, and Pillayarkuppam Villages. On March 7, the training camp would be held in other areas of Puducherry and Karaikal region.

It may be noted that the administration has announced a ban on plastic from March 1 and later deferred following agitation by plastic producers and traders.
