Pune: 5 labourers killed in sari godown fire

Pune, May 9 (UNI): Five labourers were killed when a fire broke out on Thursday at a sari godown in Uruli Devachi, about 20km from Pune city.

The incident around 5 in the morning, fire department officials said.

The labourers, who were in fast asleep in a room which is located above the godown, died of asphyxiation after the blaze broke out.

The flame was brought under control with the help of seven fire tenders, police said. The cause of the fire is said to be a short circuit.

The owner of the shop, Sushil Nandkishore had rented it out to one Bhawarlal Prajapati.

The deceased were identified as Rakesh Riyad (22), Dharmaram Wadiyasar (25), Rakesh Meghwal (25), Surat Sharma (26), all from Rajasthan while Dhiraj Chandak was from Latur district in Maharashtra, police added.

Saris worth Rs three crore were gutted in the fire.
