New Delhi/IBNS: Amid heightened tension between Tehran and Washington over the killing of  Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Qasem Soleimani in US airstrike, India on Friday called for “peace, stability and security” in the region.

"We have noted that a senior Iranian leader has been killed by the US," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

"The increase in tension has alarmed the world. Peace, stability and security in this region is of utmost importance to India. It is vital that the situation does not escalate further. India has consistently advocated restraint and continues to do so," it said.

According to reports, Qasem Soleimani spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East.

He was killed at Baghdad airport, alongside local Iran-backed militias, early on Friday in a strike ordered by US President Donald Trump, reported BBC.

The entire episode has led to an escalation of tension between Tehran and Washington.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "severe revenge awaits the criminals" behind the attack, reported BBC.

He announced three days of national mourning following the death of Qasem Soleimani.
