Railways suffer loss of Rs 2 cr due to strike in Kashmir

| @indiablooms | Oct 03, 2019, at 04:52 pm

Srinagar, Oct 3 (UNI) Railway department has suffered a loss of about two crores due to complete strike for the past two months in Kashmir valley, where people are protesting against the scrapping of Article 370 and 35 A, besides dividing the state into two Union Territories by the Centre on August 5.

However, a number of petitions were filed in the Supreme Court (SC), challenging the Centre’s decision. The Apex court has now fixed November 14 as next date of hearing after issuing a notice to the Centre to file a reply against these petitions.

The railway department, acting on the advice of state administration, particularly the police, ordered the suspension of all trains running between Baramulla in north Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region via different central and south Kashmir districts, including Srinagar. ''No train could chug on these routes since August 5 causing a loss of about two crores to railway department,'' official sourced told UNI.

Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is being considered very cheap, fast and safe against other modes of transport.

The department is acting on the advice of local administration since safety and security of the passengers besides railway staff and property was necessary, they said, adding once a green signal is received train service will be resumed.

In the past, the railway department suffered massive losses during demonstrations, who damaged coaches, lighting system and tracks, they added.
