Rajya Sabha: Narendra Modi targets Sonia Gandhi, says previous government was run by 'autopilot'

Amid the opposition walkout, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the Rajya Sabha when he targeted senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and said the previous UPA-led government was run by 'autopilot' and 'remote control'.

Participating in the debate  on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address in the Rajya Sabha, Modi, who last month sworn in as the PM for the third straight term, said: "There are such people who are used to running the government on autopilot and remote pilot."

Targeting the grand old party of the country, Modi said he felt surprised why the Congress was celebrating the election results since it registered a 'hat-trick' of defeat in the polls.

"I wonder why the Congress party is happy and celebrating... I mean what's the reason of their happiness?" Modi said.

"Is this happiness due to a 'hat-trick of defeat'?Or is this due to another 'unsuccessful launch'?" he said.

Taking a dig at the Congress over several of its leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, waving a copy of the constitution while taking their oath, Modi said: " The word like 'Sanvidhan Ki Raksha' doesn't even suit the Opposition."

Referring to the amendments made to the Constitution during the Emergency period, Modi said: " Dozens of articles of the Constitution were snatched, slit and violated during the past under Congress' rule."

"Who doesn't remember the tale of 38th, 39th and 42nd Constitutional Amendments?" he said.

He said the people rested their faith on the BJP_led NDA government for the third straight term and believed that it is only this political outfit which can protect the constitution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha, a day after ripping apart Congress in the Lok Sabha during the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address.

Modi targeted the Congress and said it could not even cross the 100-seat mark in the Lok Sabha polls for the third straight time.

Modi was remarking just a day after  Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi slammed the ruling dispensation over "Hinduism" triggering a furore in the lower house of Parliament.

Taunting Gandhi, he described his address in the Lok Sabha as 'childish'.
