Mumbai/UNI: With the rapid increase in the number of COVID cases in the state, the Maharashtra government has appointed a task force and suggested that very strict restrictions should be imposed which will be just short of a complete lockdown.

In this important meeting held on Sunday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Health Minister Dr Rajesh Tope as well as Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte, task force doctors and senior officials in the administration discussed ways to stop the spread of the COVID infection and decided to impose a complete lockdown in the next few days.

During the meeting, Thackeray gave a clear suggestion that visitors from the ministry as well as government and semi-government offices should be banned from entering and if private offices and establishments do not comply with the 50 per cent staffing restrictions, lockdown should be prepared.

Maharashtra has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent days.

India recorded a massive spike of 62, 714 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the highest single-day rise in nearly five months, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The last recorded biggest spike was on Oct 16 when 63,371 cases were reported.

During this period, 312 deaths were recorded, the highest spike in nearly three months.

The fresh deaths have taken the total number of fatalities due to the deadly disease to 1,61,552.

Active coronavirus cases in the country rose by 33,663 taking the total to 4,86,310.
