New Delhi: A Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan who killed four people on a Jaipur-Mumbai train on Monday has been sent for a mental health assessment, media reports said.

Any communal angle to the incident has been ruled out.

Chetan Kumar shot dead three passengers and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) on board a Mumbai-bound train between the Vapi and Palghar stations in Maharashtra early on Monday.

A "comprehensive mental and psychological health assessment" of the RPF personnel is being carried out, Railway Ministry sources were quoted as saying by NDTV.

They have ruled out the communal angle - raised by videos and posts on social media - and pointed out that the accused had also shot Hindus, including his own boss.

According to railway officials, the constable, on escort duty, first targeted and killed his senior ASI, Tika Ram Meena, using his service weapon.

He then proceeded to another compartment of the Jaipur-Mumbai Express train and killed three other passengers.

After attempting to escape by pulling the emergency chain, the accused, Deepak Kumar, was apprehended by police at Mira Road with assistance from Government Railway Police and RPF officials.

As per the recent reports, the accused constable was under depression and had a fight with his superior before the incident.
