SC refuses to quash notification declaring nilgai, monkeys, wild boars vermin
Reports said the top court asked the petitioner to take up the matter with the government.
The petition was filed by an animal rights activist on June 15 that asked the court to quash the three notifications that declared nilgai (blue bulls), monkeys and wild boars as vermin in Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, respectively.
The Centre’s notification was issued following requests by the state governments as the animals were causing damage to crops.
However, the petition contested that the vermin tag deprived animals of the protection provided under the law.
Union Minister Maneka Gandhi also spoke out against “indiscriminate” killing of animals and was engaged in a spat with her environment ministry colleague Prakash Javadekar.
