SC to hear BJP's plea challenging West Bengal Election Commission's U-turn on nomination deadline
New Delhi, Apr 11 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s plea challenging West Bengal Election Commission, which had cancelled its own order of extending the deadline for filing nominations in the panchayat polls, scheduled to take place in May, media reports said.
After the top court preferred to stay away from interfering in the panchayat polls, the Election Commission on Monday extended the deadline for filing nominations to 3 pm on Tuesday as West Bengal had witnessed pre-poll violence across the state.
Monday was the last day for filing nominations.
However on Tuesday, the EC took a different stance and cancelled its own order.
Following the cancellation of the order, the Bengal BJP moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The BJP and the ruling TMC have been at loggerheads, ever since the state election commission announced the poll dates.
The polls will take place on May 1, 3 and 5.
Results will be declared on May 8.
The panchayat polls are considered to be crucial as it gives a hint of the outcome of the General Elections.
