Scuffle breaks out between TMC and BJP MLAs in West Bengal Assembly over Birbhum arson

Kolkata/IBNS: Unruly scenes were witnessed in the West Bengal Assembly on Monday with the lawmakers from both the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) getting engaged in a scuffle inside the house.

In some of the videos accessed by IBNS, the leaders were seen clashing inside the house with the security people trying to control the situation.

Five BJP MLAs including Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and the party's chief whip Manoj Tigga were suspended from the house.

The scuffle broke out when the BJP MLAs were protesting in the well of the house over the Birbhum arson which killed eight people and the alleged deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

The protesting MLAs were demanding a statement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Slamming Banerjee and her TMC, BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya tweeted, "Absolute pandemonium in the West Bengal Assembly.

"After Bengal Governor, TMC MLAs now assault BJP MLAs, including Chief Whip Manoj Tigga, as they were demanding a discussion on the Rampurhat massacre on the floor of the house. What is Mamata Banerjee trying to hide?"

West Bengal Minister and TMC MLA, Chandrima Bhattacharya, charged back the BJP saying, "It is extremely shameful to see some MLAs attacking AITC MLAs, especially female legislators."

She added, "Vidhan Sabha is a place where the members can speak about their democratic rights and BJP's hooliganism shows that they do not respect the place. There are many other peaceful options to protest in Vidhan Sabha. This is not how it is done. Suvendu Adhikari, being the leader of opposition, provoked the BJP MLAs to create a chaos

"I have never witnessed a more shameful incident in this country before. We will also protest against this misdeed."

The Calcutta High Court last week ordered an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the arson, which occurred at Bogtui village in Birbhum's Rampurhat.

A Special Investigation Team, which was formed by the Banerjee government to probe into the incident, has been asked to hand over the case to CBI.

Besides, the court has asked the State to cooperate with the CBI.
