Sentenced to jail in contempt case, Justice CS Karnan moves SC challenging verdict

New Delhi, May 11 (IBNS) : Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan, who was sentenced to six months' imprisonment by the Supreme Court on contempt ground, moved the apex court against his conviction, The Hindu reported.

Karnan was found guilty of contempt for naming 20 judges of being “corrupt” earlier this year.

Chief Justice of India  Jagdish Singh Khehar  said that the top court will consider  Justice  Karnan’s prayer seeking recall of the verdict against him.

The CJI asked Karnan’s counsel to show papers authorising him to represent the judge and says that he will consider them.

After a Supreme Court bench sentenced justice Karnan to six months' imprisonment, the first of its kind in the history of Indian judiciary, he went missing and the police of three states-West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh- made futile attempts to locate him.

On being asked about his whereabouts, Justice Karnan's lawyer  Mathews J Nedumpara told the CJI that he is in Chennai.
