Setback for BJP in Karnataka as Congress wins urban local body polls

| @indiablooms | Dec 31, 2021, at 05:00 pm

Bengaluru/IBNS: In a setback for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress has won more seats than the saffron camp in the recent urban local body polls in Karnataka, media reports said.

Out of total 1,184 wards of 58 urban local bodies spread across 20 districts, the Congress has won in 501 while the BJP lagged behind with victories in 433.

Congress' former ally Janata Dal Secular (JDS) won in 45 seats while independents and smaller parties won in the remaining 205 seats.

Elated at his party's performance, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "People are waiting to throw out the illegitimate & corrupt BJP that has eclipsed progress & paralysed governance."

The defeat can be presumed as a warning sign for the BJP, which has recently performed poorly in civic polls in West Bengal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Chandigarh.

Noting the BJP's performance has improved to the last time, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said as quoted by NDTV, "If you observe, as these places have concentration of minority community voters, we have not been getting good results, but this time due to efforts, in places like Gadag and other, we have got success."
