Seventeen people abducted in Assam daily, over 19,000 kidnapped persons still untraced

Guwahati, Dec 4 (IBNS)  : An average 17 people have been abducted in Assam every day and over 19,000 abducted persons from the state are still untraced.

The recent report of National Crime Records Bureau revealed that  sixth highest abduction cases in the country were registered in Assam in 2016.

The report said that a total of 6128 kidnapping and abduction cases were reported in the north eastern Indian state and it is the sixth highest cases in the country after Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and national capital Delhi.

“In 2016, a total of 88,008 cases were registered across the country and Assam shared 7 per cent of the total cases. In 2014, a total of 77,250 kidnapping and abduction cases were registered in the country while 83,005 cases were registered in 2015,” the NCRB report said.

In Assam, 4824 such cases  were registered in 2014, while  2015 it was 5831.

The report also said that Assam recorded second highest rate of kidnapping and abduction in 2016 after Delhi.

“The rate of kidnapping and abduction in Assam in last year was 18.8 while highest in Delhi was 30.8,” the report said.

On the other hand, over 19,000 abducted persons of Assam are still untraced.

Social activist of Assam Manty Mamu Kashyap said  the growth of kidnapping and abduction cases in Assam is a serious matter.

“if we look into the kidnapping and abduction cases we see that around 87 per cent victims are female and human trafficking rackets activities have  gradually increased in the state,” the Social activist said.

A total of 661 abduction cases were registered in seven other states of the north eastern region last year.

The NCRB report said  last year only 6 cases were registered in Mizoram, 12 in Sikkim, 91 in Nagaland, 112 in Arunachal Pradeh, 139 in Tripura, 145 in Manipur and 156 in Meghalaya.
