New Delhi/IBNS: Shiv Sena on Thursday opposed the government’s move to privatise the Jawaharlal Nehru Port saying it would dent the country’s exchequer.

Raising this issue in the  Upper House, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said that  government is planning to privatize Jawaharlal Nehru Port, which makes a gross profit of 30 per cent annually.

The port has strategic importance in national security, he said, adding that that arms and armaments have been imported through this port, hence, this should not be handed over to private hands.

Apart from this, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port provides jobs to the hundreds of people as well.

The Shiv Sena lawmaker also said that it will be a loss to the country's exchequer as land and property worth crores will go to private hands. He asked the Government to reconsider the decision of privatizing this port.
