Gangtok/IBNS: Nine people were arrested on Sunday for burning effigy of former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia in Sikkim, media reports said.

All have been released on bail.

The effigy of the football icon, who is now a politician, was burnt at Namchi in south Sikkim.

The effigy was burnt to protest against Bhutia's opposition to the building of a 300-bed hospital in Namchi.

The former Indian skipper opposed the construction citing that it would destroy the famous "veterinary ground", which is the only playground in Namchi.

The protesters have been identified as the members of Dakshin Sikkim Nari Sangh.
