#StopHindiImposition trends on Twitter after Amit Shah pitches for 'One Nation, One Language'

New Delhi: #StopHindiImposition has started trending on micro-blogging site Twitter after Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke in favour of 'One Nation, One Language' on the occasion of Hindi Diwas on Saturday.

Shah said Hindi, which is widely spoken in the country, must be made the language of the country.

Taking to Twitter, Shah, who is also the president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said, "India is a country of multiple languages and each of them have significance. But there must be one language for the whole nation which will give India an identity at the world stage. It is only widely-spoken Hindi language can bind the whole nation."

Twitterati slam Shah's statement

One in the name Dobby said, "#StopHindiImposition otherwise u guys have to face this.."

Rakshith Ponnathpur tweeted, "Even a million Amit Shahs can't change what we Indians consider as our mother tongues. Not with a hundred more years of state sponsored imposition. Nor by drilling our heads with stupid lies, using our own money. My mother tongue is Kannada. ಶಾ ನೂ ಹಿಂದಿ ಅಲ್ಲ! #StopHindiImposition"

A Twitter user in the name Joseph said, "#StopHindiImposition No to the language of invaders, we Dravidians reject Hindi."

In strong language, one user tweeted, "Your Hindi Imperialistic atittude is killing us everyday, shoot All citizens who speak language other than Hindi. we Non Hindi speakers will die in a single shot...then it will be easy to build your country with one language.."

On several occasions, the southern political parties including DMK had accused the Narendra Modi government of imposing Hindi language upon people.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pitched in 'One Nation, One Poll' plan but it was also not widely supported by the Opposition.
