New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to comedian Munawar Faruqui, who was arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and violating Covid-19 protocols during a show in the New Year in Indore, media reports said.

The top court has also issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government and also put the arrest warrant in Uttar Pradesh on hold.

In tune with Faruqui's lawyer's version, the Supreme Court said the procedure to arrest him was not followed.

The comedian was denied bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Jan 28. Challenging the order, Faruqui had moved the top court with his bail plea.

He was denied bail thrice in total.

Faruqui was arrested on Jan 1 just before he was about to start his show at a restaurant following the complaint filed by Hindu Rakshak Sangathan convener Eklavya Singh Gaud, who also happens to be the son of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Malini Singh Gaud.

The comedian has been in jail since Jan 2 along with four other co-accused.
