Supreme Court refuses to stop Mamata Banerjee's Durga puja dole

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IBNS): Upholding the Calcutta High Court's verdict, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to stop West Bengal government's dole to all the Durga puja organisers across the state, media reports said.

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused to intervene in the state government's announcement of Rs 10,000 each as  disbursement to the puja committees .

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said her government will spend Rs 28 crore in total for the puja disbursement.

The petitioner had challenged the high court's verdict in the top court a day ago.

In the high court, the state has argued that the order was an executive one and the judiciary has no right to interfere in it.

Acknowledging the state's argument, the high court refused to put a stay on the puja dole, which sparked political row in the eastern state.

Last week, Mamata had said the grants have already been given to the puja committees.
