Suvendu Adhikari resigns as Nandigram MLA, keeps Bhabanipur seat

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday resigned as the MLA from Nandigram in accordance with constitutional norms after winning from two assembly constituencies in the 2026 state elections.

Adhikari, who also won from Bhabanipur, submitted his resignation from the Nandigram seat at the state assembly, Speaker Rathindra Bose said.

The Chief Minister assured voters in Nandigram that he would continue to personally monitor developments in his political stronghold despite stepping down as MLA from the constituency.

"I have a lifelong emotional bond with the people of Nandigram. Both myself and the voters of the segment know it. But I had to resign following the rules," said Adhikari on Friday.

Adhikari had defeated his immediate predecessor and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by more than 1,500 votes.

He took oath as Chief Minister on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders, and several NDA chief ministers.

A former close aide of Mamata Banerjee, Adhikari joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021 and was elected from Nandigram to become the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.

The BJP swept to power in West Bengal for the first time on May 4, winning 207 seats and ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state.
