Tamil Nadu CM orders probe into Jayalalitha's death, govt to set up inquiry commission

Chennai, Aug 17 (IBNS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswamy on Thursday said his government will set up an inquiry commission to probe into former CM J Jayalalitha's death, media reports said.

Palaniswamy said the inquiry commission will be headed by a retired judge of Madras high court.

Speaking about the investigation, the TN CM said: "Action will be taken in a timely manner."

The probe into the former CM's death was a long demand of one faction of the AIADMK which is led by O Paneerselvam.

Palaniswamy on Thursday also announced that Jayalalitha's house will be converted into a memorial which was another demand of the OPS camp.

"There are several requests from various quarters that her residence be converted into a memorial. To enlighten the public about her caliber, her achievements and sacrifices, her house will be converted into a memorial for the public to pay their respects" the TN CM was quoted by Times Of India.

The TN CM's announcement has once again raised the speculation about the possible merger of the two camps of AIADMK.

After the demise of former TN CM late J Jayalalitha, the AIADMK was divided into two camps following a bitter power struggle. While one camp is led by Paneerselvam, TN CM E Palaniswamy heads the other.

While O Panneerselvam was the interim CM of the state after Jayalalitha's death, the AIADMK general secretary Sasikala wanted to become the CM.

Though Sasikala was later convicted in his disproportionate assets case and was jailed, her fielded member E Palaniswami became the CM of the state.

Both Palaniswamy and Paneerselvam met Prime Minister Narendra Modi individually recently to discuss about the Tamil Nadu politics and merger of the AIADMK.
