Tamil Nadu custodial deaths: Cop arrested after being levied with murder charge

Chennai/IBNS: The Crime Branch of Tamil Nadu has arrested Sub Inspector Raghu Ganesh on murder charge in connection with the custodial deaths of Jayaraj and Bennix, who were tortured by police at the Sathankulam police station in Thoothukudi.

Sub Inspector Raghu Ganesh has been arrested by the Crime Branch of Tamil Nadu's CID (Criminal Investigation Department) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Search is on to nab the others who were involved in the case.

The police had earlier only registered cases of suspicious deaths.

Following this, a massive outrage on social media was triggered by the custodial deaths of the father and his son who were arrested by police for violating the lockdown norms in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Jayaraj and his son Bennix, who were the small time traders in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district, were pulled up, arrested and allegedly assaulted by the Sathankulam Police officials for keeping their mobile shop open beyond the permitted time during the lockdown.

Following the assault, which reminded the killing of black man George Floyd by a police officer in the United States, the father-son duo had succumbed to their injuries in Kovilpatti General Hospital.

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, which conducted its own inquiry, had earlier asked the CB-CID to take over the case from Tuticorin Police until the CBI, to whom the case has been handed over, takes charge.
