Tamil Nadu legislators to get 100 per cent salary hike
Chennai, Jan 10 (IBNS) : Tamil Nadu legislators on Monday moved a proposal to hike their salaries by hundred per cent days after the Government refused a salary increase of striking transport workers in the state, reports said.
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who also holds the finance portfolio, tabled a bill seeking to double the salary of the members of the Assembly.
However, the proposed pay hike was opposed by TTV Dinakaran, the rebel AIADMK leader and the DMK, the main opposition party.
According to reports, the monthly salary and other allowances paid to MLAs will be increased from the existing Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 1.05 lakh, nearly a 100 per cent hike, once the bill is passed.
The government was pushing for the implementation of the proposal -- announced in July last year - days after refusing a salary hike demanded by striking bus workers in the state.
The strike by the transport workers is on its seventh day.
