Thailand's Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn calls on President Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IBNS): Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand called on the President of India Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.

On Monday,  the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) presented Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand and George Cardona, Professor Emeritus, University of Pennsylvania, USA, with the World Sanskrit Award.

Welcoming the Princess to India, the President said India looks upon her as a special friend of India.

The President expressed his condolences on the sad demise of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and said that King Bhumibol will be remembered fondly for his compassion, foresight and commitment to the welfare of his people.

The President congratulated Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on receiving the first World Sanskrit Award and said India lauds her efforts to promote Sanskrit language and her keen interest in Indian literature, art and culture.

The President said India attaches high priority to its relations with Thailand.

"We would like to see the strengthening of our engagement in all fields, including political, security, commercial and connectivity," said President Pranab Mukherjee.

The Princess warmly reciprocated the President’s words and thanked him for his condolences. She said the former King had a special place in his heart for India.

The Princess also met Vice President M. Hamid Ansari on Monday.
